STOTT ® Pilates Prenatal and Postnatal Classes
Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or simply curious about Pilates, our Prenatal and Postnatal classes are designed for all moms—no experience needed.
Our qualified instructor will guide you through the class with care and respect, in small groups (maximum 4 people), so that everyone can progress at their own pace. Modifications for mat exercises will be provided to students based on how your body is feeling and the changes you are experiencing with pregnancy or post pregnancy.
Learn how to maintain the ideal posture, balance and avoid pain and injury during and after pregnancy. The body changes during pregnancy and it’s important to understand how to exercise safely and effectively. We will focus on reactivating and stabilizing the pelvic floor, learn to re-engage deep abdominal muscles, as well as stabilize the lower back and strengthen pelvic floor muscles. This gentle but effective workout, developed by the team at Merrithew® with the most current medical information, exercise guidelines and research available on pregnancy and movement incorporates toning balls, fitness circles, stability balls, and exercise bands to add resistance for strength and re-align your changing body while increasing a greater sense of well-being.
Benefits of Pre/Postnatal Pilates
- Teaches you body awareness
- Helps improve posture which in turn reduces the strain on joints
- It teaches relaxation and breathing skills, which will be invaluable throughout the pregnancy and also during birth
- By improving pelvic stability, Pilates may help to prevent pelvic girdle pain
- Engaging deep core muscles strengthened by Pilates exercises will help support the growing weight of the baby and your spine, by creating a natural girdle of strength. This may be helpful in reducing back pain
- Pilates can help prepare the pelvic floor to carry increased weight, for the birth itself and for postnatal recovery
*Postnatal period is often referred to as 6 weeks following the birth. However, it takes at least 9 months to recover fully from pregnancy, even longer if you are still breastfeeding. Postnatal Pilates exercises are effective for strengthening abdominal separation known as diastasis recti.
